Duolingo for English speaking? What it does well, and what to use alongside it

The short answer: keep Duolingo if you like it. It's a good habit builder for vocabulary and grammar. But it doesn't make you speak to a person, structure an answer, or recover when someone interrupts you. For that, add speaking practice: a free speaking rating for daily reps, and live practice with real people.

We run SpeakingLab, so weigh this accordingly.

What Duolingo does well

  • Habit. Streaks and short lessons make it easy to practise every day.
  • Words and grammar. Good for building the basics, especially for beginners.
  • Free. The core app costs nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Duolingo good for English speaking?

It's good for vocabulary, grammar and a daily habit. It doesn't make you speak at length, structure answers or handle a real listener, so add speaking practice alongside it.

What is the best Duolingo alternative for speaking English?

For speaking under pressure (interviews, meetings), SpeakingLab: a free AI speaking rating, a free communication test with certificate, and live practice with people. For pronunciation, ELSA Speak.

Can Duolingo make me fluent in English?

It can build the knowledge. Fluency in speaking comes from speaking out loud, a lot, ideally to people.
