SSB interview speaking tasks: PPDT narration, GD, lecturette and the interview

The short answer: the SSB is a five-day assessment, and a lot of it is spoken: narrating your story in the PPDT, the group discussion, the lecturette, and the personal interview. Assessors aren't grading your accent. They watch how clearly and confidently you communicate and how you work with a group. Practise speaking out loud, briefly and clearly, every day.
We don't coach the SSB's psychology or GTO tasks. Speaking clearly under pressure is the part we help with. Always follow your call letter and official instructions, because procedures can vary.
The speaking tasks
| Task | What happens | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| PPDT narration and discussion | After writing a story from a picture, each candidate narrates it briefly, then the group discusses a common story | Narrate in about a minute: who, what's happening, what they do, the outcome |
| Group discussion | Discussion on general topics in the GTO series | Make a clear point, build on others, never shout over people |
| Lecturette | A short talk on a topic you pick from a few, after brief preparation | Opening line, three points, a close. Finish before time runs out |
| Personal interview | A detailed conversation with the interviewing officer about you, your family, studies and choices | Be honest and consistent with what you wrote in your forms |
The lecturette, in a structure you can reuse
- Open: one line on why the topic matters.
- Three points: past, present, future; or causes, effects, solutions.
- Close: your view in one line.
Practise with a timer. Our free speaking rating gives you a random topic, 15 seconds to think and 60 to speak, which is perfect for drilling the open-three-points-close habit.
Common mistakes
- Rushing because you're nervous. Slow down; pauses sound confident.
- Memorised lines that crack under a follow-up.
- Trying to dominate the GD. Assessors watch whether you help the group.
